Through my writing at SB Nation, I came across a Facebook game from AllState that seeds your friends into a 64-team bracket based on your interactions on Facebook. My initial thought: Lame. My second thought: I sure hope LL is a No. 1 seed. My third thought: Who else would be a No. 1 seed? My fourth thought: Oh my goodness, this game is incredible! I never want it to end!

To put it mildly, I was excited. LL was indeed a No. 1, and for the most part, my interactions on Facebook mirrored my interactions in real life – 10 really good friends and a bunch of people I just like looking at.

Each friend is tied to a corresponding tournament team that shares the seed and region. So with the first two rounds complete, here is what my friend Sweet Sixteen looks like.

LL versus the ex-wife of one of my best friends

College pal Kevin Lakey versus cool cousin Andrew Wilde

Best friend Scott versus my boss at a job I held in the early 00′s

Wife friend Julie versus best friend Joshua

Best friend Casey versus friend of friend Jill

My brother Kenton versus best friend Nick

Best friend Ken versus a guy I cannot remember how we know each other

Former Boise State middle linebacker versus cousin Melissa Smith

Good luck to everyone, but mostly my wife.

SPAM. I get a lot of it. That’s to be expected when I make no effort whatsoever to protect my email address. A free e-book on LOST theories? And all you need is my email address? I don’t see any way that this could end badly!

Most of my SPAM mail is the worst kind of robo-jargon. But some is actually quite entertaining. Here are five examples:

No. 5

i like it How to: train a male child-servant now im your rss reader

I swear I never wrote a story titled “How to train a male child-servant.” Swear.

No. 4

The content on this article is really a single of the most beneficial material that I’ve ever occur across. I love your publish, I’ll occur back to verify for new posts.

Hey, my mom loves my publish, too!

No. 3

if two witches were watching two watches, which witch would watch witch watch eco-friendly products? :S

No. 2

Check out the site it pretty good!

No. 1

Drumroll please.

Subject: ASSASIN, I HAVE BEEN PAYED TO TERMINATE YOU.

This is the only way I could contact you for now, I want you to be very careful about this and keep this secret with you until I make out space for us to see. You have no need of knowing who I am or where I am from. I know this may sound very surprising to you but it’s the situation. I have been paid some ransom in advance to terminate you with some reasons listed to me by my employer. It’s someone I believe you call a friend; I have followed you closely for a while now and have seen that you are innocent of the accusations he leveled against you. Do not contact the police or try to send a copy of this to them, because if you do, I will know, and I might be pushed to do what I have been paid to do. Besides, this is the first time I turn out to be a betrayer in my job. I took pity on you, that is why I have made up my mind to help you if you are willing to help yourself.

Now listen, I will arrange for us to see face to face, but before that, I need $9,000. I will come to your home or you determine where you wish we meet; I repeat, do not arrange for the cops and if you play hard to get, it will be extended to your family. Do not set any camera to cover us or set up any tape to record our conversation; my employer is in my control now. Payment details will be provided for you to make a part payment of $3,000 first, which will serve as guarantee that you are ready to co-operate, then I will post a copy of the video tape that contains his request for me to terminate you which will be enough evidence for you to take any legal action against him before he employs another person for the job. You will pay the balance of $3,000 once you receive the tape.

Warning; do not contact the police, make sure you stay indoors once it is 7.30pm every day until this whole thing is sorted out, if you neglect any of these warnings, you will have yourself to blame. You do not have much time, so get back to me immediately

Note: I will advise you keep this to yourself alone, not even a friend or a family member should know about it because it could be one of them.

$9,000 to find out who wants me assassinated? I don’t know what the going rate is, but that sounds like a good deal!

With Opening Day of the 2008 baseball season just around the corner, many fans are celebrating the return of our national pastime. They miss the crack of the bat, the powerful home runs, and the riveting pitchers’ duels.

I miss watching the Seattle Mariners lose.

Obviously, I am not like most baseball fans. The crack of the bat brings back horrible memories of playing third base and letting grounders through my legs. Powerful home runs lead me to immediately factor in how much steroids were involved. And I believe there is no such thing as a riveting pitchers’ duel.

Still, I look forward to baseball season because I get an odd amount of joy out of watching the Mariners struggle.

Many of my Seattle friends would hate me for saying so, but watching the Mariners blow late-inning leads is one of my favorite sporting events. I can’t get enough of it. A few years ago, the M’s had one of the worst bullpens in Major League Baseball, and I had one of the best years of my life. Coincidence? Probably not.

Growing up in Nampa, Idaho, I had ample opportunity to become a Mariners fan. The team was all over the newspapers and television since they were the closest major league team to the area. But instead of falling for them, I started despising them. I liked the team when it had Griffey and Randy Johnson and A-Rod, but once they started selling off those players, my distaste for the franchise grew by leaps and bounds.

Going to school in Seattle made things worse. People in Seattle only liked the Mariners when they were doing well, and their fair-weather attitude really ate at me. Sure, there were the die-hards who would support the team no matter what, but there were more who simply did not care unless something historical was happening.

All of these factors have made Mariner losses strangely rewarding for me. I try to catch their games on FOX Sports Northwest to see what new way they have discovered to go down in flames. I follow their futile attempts at contending with a smug grin on my face. I really eat this stuff up.

So welcome back, baseball. Your fans have missed you dearly. And I hope you have some new Mariner lows to delight us with this season.
